Today was the second day of the Open Orange Bowl Regatta. I managed to solidify my lead in the regatta with three 1st place finishes, but the day was not as easy as the scoreline makes it seem.
The first race was an open and shut case, in which I led off the line and just extended throughout the race to take the win. Not much to be said here other than the fact that I had decent upwind boat speed and great downwind speed.
The second race was a bit harder. I started in the middle of the line but didn't have a great first beat tactically speaking, and rounded the windward mark in 2nd. Though I managed to pass on the downwind and round ahead of the fleet, one boat split to the other gate and made a big gain, even crossing me at one point. Through a combination of good boat speed, boat handling and smart tactics, I managed to pass him immediately after and continued to extend until the finish.
The third race was by far the hardest of the day, with pretty big pressure differentials between the different sides of the race course. After starting and tacking immediately to get to right hand pressure, it became pretty apparent that I had made a mistake. a solid lefty filled in, leaving me struggling for pressure and shift, which led to me rounding the windward mark in 4th. Though I closed the gap drastically downwind, I was still only 3rd at the leeward mark. After some weird shift and pressure changes in which I did not have the best decision making, I finally made some good decisions near the windward mark and rounded tied for second. Thankfully, my downwind speed saved me, and I managed to catch, pass and extend to finish in first once again.
Though tomorrow looks really light (read: no wind), Im looking forward to it as well as the last day of racing on Friday.
